Disney has moved up the UK release of Avengers: Doomsday. The film was originally scheduled to open on December 18, but will now arrive in British cinemas on December 16. The change apparently does not apply to audiences in other countries.

The decision has drawn criticism from Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, mainly over fears that the early screenings could trigger a wave of spoilers before the international release. Comments posted in response to the announcement complained that UK audiences could reveal important plot details to the rest of the world.

The UK has already received major Marvel films several days ahead of other markets. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame also opened in the country one or two days earlier, according to the release history cited in the reaction to the change. Even so, the latest scheduling discrepancy comes at a sensitive time for Disney.

Avengers: Doomsday follows issues involving alleged leaks of footage from Avengers: Endgame Encore, a re-release opening in cinemas this week. The leaked material is said to have dampened some of the anticipation surrounding the new screening, which includes only a few additional minutes of footage. Reports indicate that the extra material could add between three and six minutes, with rumors that IMAX and Infinity Vision theaters will show a longer version.

It has not yet been confirmed where the Endgame Encore leaks came from. One possibility raised is that the footage was recorded during advance screenings for press and influencers, a common practice in the industry, but that theory has not been confirmed.

The earlier UK release may not be the only potential source of spoilers. Press and influencer screenings of Avengers: Doomsday could also take place before December 16. The change has therefore reignited fan complaints about recent decisions surrounding the Endgame re-release, including possible differences between screening formats and alterations made years after the original release.
