Tyrant of Valakut, Creature — dragon, designed by Steven Belledin first released in Jun, 2002 in the set Magic Online Promos and was printed exactly in 4 different ways.
This card would be a great fit in a red aggressive deck that focuses on casting multiple spells in a turn to enable the surge ability. Decks that can consistently cast spells quickly can take advantage of the surge cost and the immediate impact of dealing 3 damage when Tyrant of Valakut enters the battlefield. However, in competitive Magic: the Gathering formats, there may be better options available depending on the specific strategy of the deck, such as Thundermaw Hellkite or Glorybringer, which offer similar effects with additional benefits, making Tyrant of Valakut less likely to see play in top-tier decks.

For some cards, surge represents only an alternative cost, a discount that applies if you or a teammate has cast another spell this turn. Other cards, like Reckless Bushwhacker, have additional abilities or effects if you paid the surge cost to cast the spell.

If an instant or sorcery spell cast for its surge cost is copied, the copy is also considered to have had its surge cost paid.
