Patrick Stewart died at 86 at his home in Los Angeles. The British actor’s death on Wednesday (28) was announced on his social media account. Stewart had Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

For generations of fans, he was best known for two pop culture roles: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. They brought a career spanning more than six decades, including extensive stage work, to audiences on screen.

Stewart played Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He continued the role in the franchise’s films and returned to lead his own series, Star Trek: Picard, which premiered in 2020. It was a return to one of the roles that helped shape science fiction television.

Stewart first appeared as Charles Xavier in 2000’s X-Men. The leader of the mutants became another recurring role for the actor. He reprised it in films including 2017’s Logan and 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The latter marked his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Stewart is also confirmed for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, the upcoming Marvel Studios film in which he is expected to reprise his role as Xavier. The film is scheduled to open in Brazilian theaters on December 17, 2026, one day before its announced North American release.
