Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter have joined Tom Holland in Sony’s Fred Astaire biopic. Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred’s older sister and Broadway dance partner. Carpenter will portray Ginger Rogers, the actress who formed one of Astaire’s best-known on-screen partnerships.Paul King, the filmmaker behind Paddington, will direct. The project comes during a busy period for Holland, who stars in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.“I’m thrilled and honored to have been entrusted with bringing to the screen the story of Fred Astaire and his original dance partner, his older sister Adele,” King said. The director also highlighted Fred’s on-screen legacy and Adele’s less-remembered career. According to him, there is no surviving footage of Adele dancing.King said that portraying the two dance icons of the 20th century would not be possible without Holland, Qualley and Carpenter. The screenplay was written by King and Steven Levenson, based on Kathleen Riley’s book The Astaires: Fred & Adele.Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor are producing the film alongside Holland through Billy17. Ben Holden and Josh Hyams are also producers, representing Lightbulb Pictures.Qualley won a Golden Globe and received a Critics Choice nomination for The Substance. She was also nominated for an Emmy for Fosse/Verdon and received Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice nominations for Netflix’s limited series The Maid.Carpenter, who has two Grammys and has sold millions of records, has also appeared in Work It and The Hate U Give.
