Batman is already active in Gotham during the events of Clayface. Peter Safran, co-chair of DC Studios, confirmed the detail in an interview with Collider. The film will be the new DC cinematic universe’s first visit to the city, but its story centers on Matt Hagen, not the hero.

Played by Tom Rhys Harries, Hagen is introduced in an origin story that follows his transformation from one of Hollywood’s biggest names into the villain known as Clayface. Safran’s confirmation places Batman in the same Gotham where Hagen’s story unfolds, though it does not establish whether he will appear in the film.

The idea for Clayface came from Mike Flanagan. According to Safran, the filmmaker had a special connection to “Feat of Clay”, an episode of the Batman animated series, and approached the character through the consequences of a bad decision. Flanagan delivered the script, but other commitments prevented him from directing, as DC Studios had initially intended.

James Watkins was then hired to direct and brought in Hossein Amini to work on the script. Safran said Watkins wanted audiences to empathize with Matt before the events that change his life. The executive described the finished film as a combination of Flanagan’s and Watkins’s visions.

Although body horror is part of the film, Safran singled out Matt’s relationship with Naomi Ackie’s character as central to the story. Matt falls in love with his doctor in a story that, according to the executive, also works as a drama when the horror elements are set aside.
