Transformers: The Movie will return to cinemas internationally from September 17 to 22, with screenings celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1986 animated feature. The event will include a new addition: the previously unreleased short Optimus Prime: Awakening will screen immediately after the original film.

The 12-minute animated short continues the story told in Transformers: The Movie and was described by Fathom Entertainment as a “love letter” to the Transformers community and actor Peter Cullen. Cullen, who died on August 26, delivers his final original performance as Optimus Prime in the short.

Frank Welker also returns to voice Megatron and Soundwave. In a statement released by Fathom Entertainment, the actor said that Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other and highlighted the connection between the hero and Cullen’s work.

“Returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one last story alongside Peter’s Optimus in Optimus Prime: Awakening was a true gift,” said Welker. The actor added that he would miss his friend, but Cullen’s voice and values would continue to be part of Optimus Prime.

The return of Transformers: The Movie and the screening of the short are presented by Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment. The original feature, released in 1986, is at the heart of the celebration, while the new production expands the story with Peter Cullen’s final appearance in the role that defined his career in the franchise.

The commemorative screenings are scheduled to take place from September 17 to 22 in cinemas internationally, with Optimus Prime: Awakening reserved for after the film.
