The Final Problem, a four-part Spanish mystery series, has become a global hit on Netflix. The show ranked fifth in the weekly viewership chart for titles in languages other than English, with 2.6 million views during its opening week.The thriller also ranks among Netflix’s most-watched series worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. On the list, The Final Problem trails Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, a controversial installment in an anthology, and East of Eden, a recently released literary adaptation.The story follows a retired actor known to audiences for playing Sherlock Holmes who must investigate a murder on an island off the coast of Mallorca. Despite the title’s reference to a popular Sherlock Holmes story, the series follows the tradition of Agatha Christie’s classic mysteries, with a crime surrounded by suspects in a paradise setting.The Final Problem stars José Coronado, María Valverde and Maribel Verdú. The series joins the new wave of detective stories that gained momentum in cinemas with the success of Murder on the Orient Express, released in 2017 under the direction of Kenneth Branagh. The film grossed US$350 million worldwide and spawned two sequels.Two years later, Rian Johnson introduced Knives Out, an original mystery inspired by Christie’s work. The film grossed more than US$300 million worldwide and also led to two follow-ups released by Netflix. On television, productions such as Only Murders in the Building and A Murder at the End of the World helped expand the genre’s reach.The Final Problem does not yet have an official Rotten Tomatoes score, but all the reviews listed so far are positive.
