Taylor Swift surprised Dakota Johnson by appearing during the opening monologue of Saturday Night Live. The singer joined in after the actress talked about her relationships and jokingly called Swift her “literal therapist.”

Swift pushed back on the idea, saying Johnson showed up at her house once a week with an empty bottle of wine, vented on the couch and received only brief comments about her own problems. The singer also said she gave her friend Pedialyte and asked her security team to take her home.

The monologue had already covered Dakota Johnson’s public relationships with Chris Martin of Coldplay and Role Model. The actress also joked about the latex dress she wore that night, the failure of Madame Web and her new film, Verity, which she described as a psychosexual erotic thriller.

With Swift by her side, Johnson said that dating musicians was a kind of public service, referring to the money the public would save on antidepressants. When she mentioned the United States, England, parts of Ireland and Cleveland, Swift responded with “allegedly,” a reference to Travis Kelce.

Swift also shouted that it was Johnson’s birthday before midnight, when the date would officially be celebrated. During the episode’s closing acknowledgments, the singer returned to the stage with a cake for the actress.

Swift did not perform during the appearance, as the show’s musical guest was Turnstile. The appearance also renewed the pair’s collaboration; they previously appeared together in the Patient Zero music video, which was directed by and starred Swift. The video received an extended version exclusive to Apple Music, featuring eight minutes of behind-the-scenes footage.

Swift’s last appearance on the show came in October 2023, when she introduced musical guest Ice Spice. The singer also hosted the show in 2009 and appeared as a musical guest in episodes in 2009, 2017, 2019 and 2021.
