Samurai Spirits, SNK’s classic fighting game, is being adapted for the big screen with a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis, creator of the series Altered Carbon. The project is being developed by The Arena, a production company led by Erik Feig.

Originally released in arcades in 1993, Samurai Spirits features one-on-one battles set in feudal Japan. The franchise stood out by placing weapons at the center of its fights: characters can battle with swords or face their opponents unarmed.

The adaptation is expected to explore the world of warriors and conflicts established in the games. The story follows characters determined to confront evil and destroy their enemies, although details about the cast, director and release date have not yet been announced.

The series received several sequels over the decades. The most recent title is Samurai Shodown, released in 2019, keeping the property active in SNK’s catalog.

Samurai Spirits is part of The Arena’s strategy to develop films based on SNK properties, from one of the companies behind some of the most influential arcade games of the 1990s and 2000s. SNK is also financing the new production company.

The company’s projects include a Fatal Fury film, with a screenplay by David S. Goyer, who wrote Batman: The Dark Knight. The production company is also preparing Geese, an independent prequel centered on the Fatal Fury villain, with Grant Singer, director of Reptiles, attached to direct.

In animation, Fatal Fury: The Vow is being produced in partnership with Skybound, Robert Kirkman’s company. Samurai Spirits does not yet have a release date.
