Miley Cyrus became emotional as she paid tribute to her godmother, Dolly Parton, during a show at the Hollywood Bowl. Sitting on the edge of the stage, Cyrus told the audience it was the only place she had ever seen Parton perform live. She then sang Jolene, one of the country star’s classics.Cyrus said she used to spend a lot of time backstage at Parton’s shows. If her godmother had had her way, Cyrus said, she would have been onstage beside her in a matching outfit. But that night at the Hollywood Bowl, she wanted to do something different: watch from the audience and enjoy the show like any other fan.One detail made the memory especially meaningful. Parton knew Cyrus was in the audience and opened her show by singing the theme song from Hannah Montana, the series in which Cyrus starred. Speaking about her godmother, Cyrus said she feels Parton’s presence more than ever and misses her.The tribute came after Parton’s death. In August, Cyrus had written about the loss, saying she would always love her godmother and want to make her proud. She also spoke of the grief shared by family, friends and others who would miss her.At the Hollywood Bowl, that memory of seeing Parton on the same stage led Cyrus into her performance of Jolene. Her set that night also included songs such as Wrecking Ball, The Climb, Party in the U.S.A. and Flowers.
