Universal has released the first images of Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan as the detectives in Miami Vice ’85. Butler plays James “Sonny” Crockett in the new film, while Jordan takes on the role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. The images show Jordan with a beard, a serious expression and a leather jacket. Butler is seen pointing a gun and wearing a gray suit rather than the white outfit associated with Crockett in the original series. It is the first look at the duo at the center of the new take on the story. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, of Top Gun: Maverick, and written by Dan Gilroy, of Nightcrawler. The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez, Andre Holland, Michael Irby and Whitney Peak. The original series ran for five seasons on NBC and followed two undercover Miami detectives taking on drug kingpins. Don Johnson played Crockett, and Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs. Its visual style became closely associated with director and executive producer Michael Mann.Mann brought Miami Vice to the big screen in 2006, with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles. The film received a poor response from critics and at the box office at the time. The 1980s series is also cited as one of the inspirations for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.Miami Vice ’85 is in production and is scheduled to open in theaters on May 19, 2028.
