Mariska Hargitay won two Emmys for My Mom Jayne, the HBO documentary in which she explores the life and career of her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield, as well as questions surrounding her biological father.

The film won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, while Hargitay also took home the award for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program. The wins kicked off the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles during the ceremony formerly known as the Creative Arts Emmys.

Onstage, Hargitay paid tribute to feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who died Wednesday at 92. The actress recalled advice she received from her friend: “Please tell your own story.”

“One of the most important things we can do for each other is get to know one another through stories,” Hargitay said while accepting the documentary award. She said she came to know her mother in a different way while making the film, calling the experience “an indescribable gift.”

Returning to the stage to accept the directing trophy, Hargitay said she decided to make My Mom Jayne during the pandemic, but it took her some time to realize it was a story she could tell and direct herself. The artist again cited Steinem’s encouragement for women to share their experiences and called for new ways of telling the stories of “half the population of Earth.”

My Mom Jayne beat fellow nominees John Candy: I Like Me, Marty, Life Is Short, Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! and Ocean with David Attenborough in the documentary special category.

The recognition comes during a busy period for Hargitay, who is heading into her 28th season as the star of Law & Order: SVU. Over the past year, she also made her Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing and agreed to host the Primetime Emmy Awards, whose televised ceremony is set for September 14 on NBC and Peacock.
