IT: Welcome to Derry returned earlier than expected with a secret episode released on HBO Max. Titled IT: A Story of Derry, the episode is set even further back in the franchise’s timeline, before the entity takes the form of the clown Pennywise.

The story follows three young Indigenous women as they encounter the nearly immortal, shape-shifting monster that haunts Derry for the first time. The episode also delves deeper into IT’s mythology and draws on some of the more unusual concepts from Stephen King’s original books.

The episode also features a surprise appearance by Zahn McClarnon, known for his work on Dark Winds and Westworld. It is now streaming on HBO Max.

The first season of Welcome to Derry is set in the 1960s, 27 years before the events of Andy Muschietti’s film IT. The story follows a new group of children terrorized by Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgård, who reprises the role of the clown from the films.

The series has been renewed for a second season, which is still in the early stages of development. Andy Muschietti, co-creator and producer, revealed that the next installment will tell a new story, with new characters and a 1935 setting.

At the heart of the story will be the Bradley Gang, a group of criminals who will cross paths with the clown. The gang also appeared briefly in the first season’s opening credits.

The franchise began with Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT. The book was adapted as a miniseries in 1990, starring Tim Curry as Pennywise, and later became a two-part film series. As the second season continues through development, IT: A Story of Derry is now available to stream on HBO Max.
