Harry Potter has cast Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle, the teenage version of Voldemort, for its second season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Known for the series Invasion, Barratt will portray the character in flashbacks that reveal part of the future villain’s past.

The casting also marks a departure from the 2002 film. Barratt is in his late teens, while Tom Riddle is 16 during the events depicted in the book. Christian Coulson, who played the character in the film adaptation, was 23 when he was cast.

Tom Riddle will play a significant role in the second season’s story. In The Chamber of Secrets, Harry encounters a teenage version of the villain through a magical diary and begins to discover how the young man would eventually become Lord Voldemort.

Barratt began his career at an early age and, at 13, became the youngest-ever winner of an International Emmy for the television film Responsible Child. He also appeared in Apple TV+’s Invasion and has been cast in the adaptation of Life Is Strange.

The production has announced further casting news for its second season. Lenny Rush will play Dobby, while Bonnie Hill will take over the role of Ginny Weasley from Gracie Cochrane, who portrayed the character in the first season. Kit Harington has also been confirmed as Gilderoy Lockhart.

The second season has been greenlit and is expected to begin filming in the second half of the year. Before then, the first season of Harry Potter will premiere at Christmas on HBO and HBO Max.
