Oscar winner Eva Marie Saint, star of “On the Waterfront” and “North by Northwest,” died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. The actress was 102.Saint won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “On the Waterfront,” Elia Kazan’s 1954 drama. She starred opposite Marlon Brando as Edie Doyle. The film received 12 Oscar nominations and won eight awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.Before making her mark on the big screen, Saint built a career in television. She made her debut in “Camp Beaumont” and joined the regular cast of “One Man’s Family.” She also appeared in drama series including “Philco Playhouse,” “Robert Montgomery Presents” and “Studio One.” Two projects from that period, “Middle of the Night” and a musical adaptation of “Our Town,” earned her Emmy nominations.One of her best-known roles came in “North by Northwest,” Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller. Saint played Eve Kendall, a secret agent who becomes involved in the escape of advertising executive Roger Thornhill, played by Cary Grant.The actress continued working in film in the decades that followed. She appeared in “Exodus” and “All Fall Down,” directed by John Frankenheimer, as well as “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” “The Graduate” and “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” In “The Sandpiper,” she starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton; in “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming!,” she appeared in Norman Jewison’s comedy.Beginning in the 1970s, Saint divided her time between television and the theater. Her later appearances included the series “Moonlighting” and the 2006 film “Superman Returns,” in which she played Martha Kent, Clark Kent’s adoptive mother.Throughout her career, the actress moved between film, television and the stage without committing to a studio contract.
