Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of True Detective season five. He joins Nicolas Cage in the latest chapter of HBO’s anthology series, which is scheduled to begin production in 2027.

The two characters already have names: Banderas will play Rai Garcia, while Cage will portray Henry Logan. The story will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. So far, no details have been released about the case at the center of the season or its premiere date.

The confirmation of Banderas’ casting comes after Cage spoke about his involvement at New York Comic-Con. The actor’s arrival on the series had been under discussion for more than a year, but the new roles are only now beginning to take shape in the season-five cast.

Issa López will remain at the helm of True Detective as writer, director and showrunner. She oversaw the fourth season, Night Country, which was set in Alaska and starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. López will also executive-produce the new chapter alongside Cage, Banderas and other names connected to the series.

Although the plot remains under wraps, López has teased important connections between the events in Alaska and the story in Jamaica Bay. At the same time, she indicated that the season will feature a new story and new characters. The change of setting follows the anthology format: previous seasons took True Detective to Louisiana, California, the Ozarks and Alaska. Filming on the fifth season is scheduled for 2027; HBO has not yet announced when the episodes will premiere.
