Fairy Tail is a Japanese fantasy manga written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. It ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from August 2006 to July 2017, with its chapters collected in 63 tankobon volumes. The story is set in Earth-land, a world in which magic is commonplace. Lucy Heartfilia, a Celestial Spirit Mage, leaves home to seek admission to Fairy Tail, an unruly wizard guild in Magnolia Town.
After meeting the Fire Dragon Slayer Natsu Dragneel and his flying feline companion, Happy, Lucy is invited into the guild. Natsu is searching for Igneel, the dragon who raised him. Fairy Tail's members take paid jobs and confront threats including the rival guild Phantom Lord, Jellal Fernandes and the Tower of Heaven, the dark guild Oracion Seis, and the Baram Alliance. The guild is led for much of the series by Makarov Dreyar.
Major arcs broaden the setting beyond Magnolia. In Edolas, the characters encounter a parallel world where magic has different rules. The Tenrou Island storyline reveals surviving members of the dark guild Grimoire Heart and links the conflict to Zeref, an immortal black wizard. Following a seven-year absence caused by magical preservation on Tenrou, Fairy Tail enters the Grand Magic Games, a tournament held in Fiore. Later battles involve the demon guild Tartaros and the Alvarez Empire, as Natsu's origin and his connection to Zeref become central. The conflict also brings Acnologia, a Dragon Slayer who became a dragon, into focus.
Fairy Tail inspired a television anime adaptation that began in 2009, as well as original video animations, video games, and films. The manga's continuation, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, follows the guild after the original story and is serialized on Magazine Pocket. Mashima provides the storyboard, while Atsuo Ueda draws it.
Lucy's fellow core guild members include the armored mage Erza Scarlet, ice mage Gray Fullbuster, lightning user Laxus Dreyar, dragon slayer Gajeel Redfox, and water mage Juvia Lockser. Wendy Marvell, a Sky Dragon Slayer, joins after the Oracion Seis conflict, accompanied by the Exceed Carla. The series identifies Natsu as E.N.D., or Etherious Natsu Dragneel, a demon created from Zeref's dead younger brother. Its final chapters depict the defeat of both Acnologia and Zeref, after which the guild undertakes the 100 Years Quest, a job described as having remained unfinished for a century. It won the 2009 Kodansha Manga Award for shonen manga, recognizing Mashima's serial in Japan.
