About Whir of Invention

Whir of Invention, Instant, designed by Christine Choi first released in Jan, 2017 in the set Aether Revolt Promos and was printed exactly in 10 different ways. It see play in 2 formats: Commander and Brawl.

A deck focused on artifacts and artifact ramp would benefit from including Whir of Invention, as it allows for a powerful tutor effect to search for a specific artifact and put it directly onto the battlefield. However, in some cases, Tezzeret the Seeker may be a better option due to his ability to untap artifacts and potentially generate more mana. Whir of Invention should definitely see play in decks that rely heavily on artifacts and have a high density of them to take advantage of its improvise ability.

When using improvise to cast a spell with in its mana cost, first choose the value for X. That choice, plus any cost increases or decreases, will determine the spell’s total cost. Then you can tap artifacts you control to help pay that cost. For example, if you cast Whir of Invention (a spell with improvise and mana cost ) and choose X to be 3, the total cost is . If you tap two artifacts, you’ll have to pay .
