Serra Avatar can be a powerful addition to a deck focused on gaining and maintaining a high life total, such as a lifegain or control deck. Its ability to scale with your life total can make it a formidable threat on the battlefield. However, it may not be the best choice for decks looking for immediate impact or faster win conditions, as its high casting cost and vulnerability to removal can be drawbacks. Other cards like Baneslayer Angel or Lyra Dawnbringer could provide similar benefits with potentially lower risks and more immediate impact in certain situations.

Whether or not the ability triggers depends on if the Avatar has the ability while in the graveyard. If it doesn’t (thanks to Yixlid Jailer, for instance), then the ability won’t trigger. It doesn’t matter whether the Avatar had the ability in its previous zone (it will trigger even if it had been on the battlefield with Humility).
