The independent horror film Buddy has already grossed US$ 24.8 million in the United States, more than eight times its estimated production budget of around US$ 3 million. The film also holds an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film’s success has been accompanied by an unusual situation at theaters across the country. Some parents reportedly took young children to screenings believing they were going to see a children’s adventure starring a friendly orange unicorn. The film, however, is nothing like that: it has been described as an extremely violent horror movie for adults.

Since its release, theater employees and moviegoers have taken to social media to report seeing families with young children, some of whom appeared to be around eight years old.

The confusion is directly linked to Buddy’s marketing campaign, which draws on the look of children’s television programs from the 1990s. The giant, smiling orange unicorn recalls characters such as Barney, but its innocent appearance is part of the film’s macabre premise.

The story follows a group of children who become trapped in the world of an old television show called It’s Buddy!. At first, the setting appears cheerful, with songs, games and educational lessons led by the mascot. Gradually, Buddy’s behavior becomes disturbing, and the children’s program turns into a scene of violence and horror.

The cast includes Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, Michael Shannon, Patton Oswalt and Keegan-Michael Key, who voices the terrifying unicorn. The contrast between the appearance of a children’s show and its adult content helped put Buddy at the center of the conversation during its theatrical run in the United States.
