With a record in Brazil and historic numbers, Spider-Man: Brand New Day threatens to dominate the global box office.

Spider-Man returned to theaters on a massive scale. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the Marvel hero's new adventure in partnership with Sony, grossed US$ 927 million in its worldwide opening weekend, adding up to US$ 572 million across 66 international markets and US$ 355 million at the domestic box office.

The result places the feature film as the second-biggest global opening of all time, behind only “Avengers: Endgame,” which reached US$ 1.2 billion in 2019. The figure also comfortably surpasses the third-place title on the list, held by “Avengers: Infinity War,” with US$ 640 million.

In the international market, China led the opening with US$ 121 million. The United Kingdom, Mexico, and South Korea followed. Brazil also delivered an impressive performance: the film set an opening record in the country with US$ 23.8 million, according to figures released by Variety. France, India, and Spain are among the other territories that posted opening records.

Interest in premium theaters also helped drive the release. Even without an Imax run, “Brand New Day” broke records for Dolby, 4DX, and ScreenX, reinforcing audiences' demand for screenings on special screens and formats.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the film is the fourth starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker. The plot follows the consequences of Peter deciding to erase his own existence from everyone's memory at the end of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. As a mysterious entity threatens New York, the hero faces changes to his powers and sees MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, continue their lives at MIT without remembering him.

The initial reception is also positive: the feature reached 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and received an “A” in CinemaScore exit polls. For producer Amy Pascal, the result demonstrates the strength of a story that preserves Peter Parker's humanity.

With little competition expected in the coming weeks, the new Spider-Man film is poised to dominate the rest of the summer and may come close to an even greater achievement: surpassing US$ 2 billion globally.
