Verity has surpassed $160 million at the worldwide box office. The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel has grossed $162.7 million, more than four times its estimated $40 million production budget.

In the United States, the film has grossed $71.5 million. International markets contributed another $91.2 million to the total. Its North American debut had already brought in $62.5 million, the second-biggest opening for a film based on a Hoover novel, behind It Ends with Us, which opened to $95.6 million.

The film’s commercial performance contrasts with the reception reflected in the reviews cited. Verity has a 33% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and received a C- from CinemaScore. Among adaptations of the author’s novels, it has the lowest rating: It Ends with Us earned an A-, while Reminders of Him and Regretting You received Bs.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the thriller follows Lowen Ashleigh, a financially struggling writer who accepts a job offered by Jeremy Crawford. He is the husband of Verity Crawford, a successful author who is unable to finish the books in a series after a mysterious accident.

At the family’s estate, Lowen discovers an unfinished manuscript that could reveal disturbing secrets about the Crawfords’ past. The writer must determine whether its contents are fiction or a warning about Verity. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova and Brady Wagner.

Written by Nick Antosca, Verity is still playing in Brazilian theaters.
