‘The Odyssey’, the new epic directed by Christopher Nolan, is still showing in theaters across the country and is approaching the US$ 1 billion mark at the box office. Amid its impressive performance, however, the film was leaked in high quality on X, formerly Twitter, reaching millions of views after a post went viral on July 25.According to Variety, a post made at 2:25 p.m. that day asked whether anyone had uploaded the full film to the platform and promoted a message from another account, which was later suspended. The post contained a high-definition copy of ‘The Odyssey’, a fact verified by the magazine itself.The video surpassed 2.1 million views in just two and a half hours. After reaching that number, the content was replaced with a removal notice for copyright infringement. Shortly afterward, the responsible profile was also banned from the social network. Universal Pictures stated that it immediately initiated its removal protocols and that it would take the appropriate measures to protect its intellectual property rights.“We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated our removal protocols. The links promised to show the film, but redirected users to the Rickroll, a classic internet prank featuring the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up,” Rick Astley’s hit released in 1987.Despite the incident, the leak did not affect the film’s pace in theaters. In just over two weeks in theaters, ‘The Odyssey’ surpassed US$ 800 million at the worldwide box office. In the United States, its gross has already exceeded US$ 370 million, surpassing the US$ 330 million earned by ‘Oppenheimer’ in the domestic market.The new film is still seeking to surpass the US$ 975.8 million earned worldwide by ‘Oppenheimer’, but analysts project that its current pace could take it to the US$ 1 billion mark.
