Tender Loving Care, the new feature from Mike Leigh and possibly the director’s final film, won the Golden Shell, the top prize at the San Sebastián Festival. The British production also received the Best Screenplay award, which was likewise presented to Leigh.The film also earned Kate O’Flynn the Silver Shell for Best Performance. She shared the award with Asta Kamma August, recognized for her work in Growth of the Soil, directed by Hans Petter Moland. The production also won the jury prize for Best Cinematography, presented to Norwegian cinematographer Oskar Dahlsbakken.Mike Leigh was not in Spain to receive the honors. The filmmaker was in New York for the U.S. premiere of Tender Loving Care and sent a video message to the festival. In the recording, he thanked the festival for the recognition given to the film, and especially for the Golden Shell.The competition lineup also awarded the Special Jury Prize to Border, directed by Ah Biao. Amanda Kernell received the Silver Shell for Best Director for Brace Your Heart, while Javier Cámara won the Silver Shell for Best Supporting Performance for 5 More Minutes. The audience award from the city of Donostia/San Sebastián went to La bola negra.The jury was chaired by Ira Sachs and included director and screenwriter Genki Kawamura, screenwriter Catherine Paillé, actress and producer Alice Braga, actress Patricia López Arnaiz, actor Bill Skarsgård and producer Mike Goodridge.Among the other awards, Body of Glass, directed by Naëmi Ada, won the Kutxabank-New Directors award; The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer, directed by Alessandra Sanguinetti, took the Horizontes award; and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, directed by Jane Schoenbrun, won the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera award. The SGAE Award for Best Original Music went to Amine Bouhafa for 7h40 ce matin.
