Netflix is developing a prequel series to Outer Banks, tentatively titled Kildare. Set 20 years before the events of the original series, it will explore the origins of the social divide between the Pogues and Kooks on the fictional island of Kildare.

Outer Banks creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke are writing the new project after wrapping up the flagship series, which reached its fifth and final season. The trio had been discussing the spin-off for several years, but it has only recently entered formal development at the streaming platform.

The series will return to the roots of the conflict between the working-class residents of The Cut, known as Pogues, and the wealthy Figure Eight residents, the Kooks. According to Josh Pate, the story will focus on the moment the island was divided between those with greater means and those with less.

Shannon Burke said the prequel will feature younger versions of familiar characters while introducing new ones. Since the story takes place two decades earlier, it is expected to focus on the protagonists’ parents’ generation.

Outer Banks has introduced figures from that generation throughout its seasons, including John B and JJ’s fathers, Sarah and Rafe’s father, as well as Pope and Kiara’s parents. In its fourth season, the series also revealed information about JJ’s biological parents and his mother’s origins in an old, wealthy local family.

The fifth season of Outer Banks premieres on August 20 and brings the story that began with John B, Sarah, Pope, JJ and Kiara to a close. Kildare is still in the scriptwriting stage and has not announced a cast or premiere date.
