Johnny Depp’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol has received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA for “sinister content.” Although it has been billed as a scarier take on the classic, the production is not expected to deliver the kind of horror that leaves audiences trembling.

Titled Ebenezer e os Fantasmas do Natal (Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol), the film follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former business partner. The spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future then appear to warn him and teach him lessons that transform him into a more generous and compassionate man.

The film is directed by Ti West, known for the X, Pearl and MaXXXine trilogy. The screenplay was written by Nathaniel Halpern, while the production puts its faith in a striking visual style. Ebenezer e os Fantasmas do Natal arrives in theaters nationwide on November 12.

The cast includes Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Scrooge marks Johnny Depp’s return to major Hollywood studio productions after a nearly eight-year hiatus. The actor’s last major production was Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, released in 2018. During that period, Depp focused on independent projects in Europe, including Jeanne du Barry.

The actor is also attached to Day Drinker, a thriller directed by Marc Webb and scheduled for late 2026. Meanwhile, Robert Eggers is developing another version of the story, which is expected to star Willem Dafoe.
