Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Wistoria: Wand and Sword is a Japanese anime adapted from the manga written by Fujino Ōmori, best known for Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, and illustrated by Toshi Aoi. The manga began serialization in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in December 2020. It follows Will Serfort, a boy born into a world where magic defines social standing, despite his inability to cast spells. Will attends Regarden Magical Academy, where students learn to use wands and pursue the rank of Magia Vander, the elite magicians who protect the world from dangers beyond its great barrier. His reason for entering the academy is personal: he promised his childhood friend Elfaria Alvis Serfort that he would reach the top beside her. Elfaria has already become a Magia Vander, known as the Ice Queen, and resides in the Tower. Rather than relying on magic, Will fights with physical ability and swordsmanship, making him an object of ridicule among classmates who call him “no-talent.” The series establishes its central conflict through that mismatch: Will must collect academic credits, survive dungeon assignments, and prove himself in an institution designed for spellcasters. His unusual abilities, including his connection to a sword-based power, gradually make clear that his apparent lack of magic does not mean he is powerless. The adaptation was produced by Actas and Bandai Namco Pictures. Tatsuya Yoshihara directed it, with Tatsuya Yoshihara also overseeing series composition, Sayaka Ono providing character designs, and Yuki Hayashi composing the music. It premiered in Japan on July 7, 2024, on the TBS network and its affiliated stations. The first season ran for twelve episodes, concluding on September 29, 2024. Crunchyroll streamed the anime internationally, including an English dub. Kohei Amasaki voices Will in Japanese, while Akira Sekine voices the academy student Colette Loire and Atsumi Tanezaki plays Elfaria. The supporting school cast includes Sion Ulster, Julius Reinberg, Lihanna Owenzaus, and Wignall Lindor. Penguin Research performs the opening theme, “Fire and Fear”; the ending theme, “Frozen,” is performed by true. Immediately after episode twelve aired, the production announced that a second season was in development, extending Will’s climb toward the Tower and the promise that drives him. The anime’s action direction emphasizes the contrast between wand combat and Will’s close-range blade work, a defining visual expression of the manga’s premise. It also underscores his determination to stand beside Elfaria within Regarden’s academy culture.
