Saturday Night Live premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975, under the original title NBC's Saturday Night. Created by Lorne Michaels, the live late-night program replaced reruns of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on Saturday evenings. Its first cast included Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, and Garrett Morris, with George Coe and Michael O'Donoghue also credited in the premiere. The show quickly established its signature combination of topical sketches, a live music performance, and a guest host who often participates in the comedy.

The format has remained recognizable while its cast and political targets have changed. Chase's opening imitation of President Gerald Ford helped define the program's early satirical style, while Belushi and Aykroyd developed recurring characters such as the samurai and the Blues Brothers. Radner created memorable figures including Roseanne Roseannadanna and Emily Litella. Later eras produced recurring sketches and characters such as Eddie Murphy's James Brown parody, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's “Wayne's World,” Phil Hartman's impressions, and Will Ferrell's portrayal of President George W. Bush. The Weekend Update segment, first anchored by Chase and later associated with Dennis Miller, Tina Fey, Seth Meyers, and Colin Jost, has remained a central news-parody feature.

Because episodes are broadcast live from Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center in New York, the show has an unusual relationship with current events. It can respond to political speeches, elections, scandals, and disasters within days or even hours. Presidential impersonations have included Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, Melissa McCarthy as White House press secretary Sean Spicer, and Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris. The program has also become a launchpad for major performers. Alumni including Bill Murray, Murphy, Hartman, Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, and Ferrell built successful careers in film, television, and comedy after or alongside their tenure.

SNL has faced cancellations, cast changes, and controversies, but its influence is unusually durable. It has won numerous Primetime Emmy Awards and inspired films based on recurring sketches, including Wayne's World and The Blues Brothers. In 2002, the show was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and in 2017, the Peabody Awards recognized its political satire. Its fiftieth season began in 2024, marking a rare television institution whose weekly production still depends on a writing room, a host monologue, a musical guest, and the unpredictable timing that live television can provide every week to viewers.
