Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese television anime adapted from Gege Akutami’s manga, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018. The first television season, produced by MAPPA and directed by Sunghoo Park, aired on MBS and TBS’s Super Animeism block from October 2020 to March 2021. It follows Yuji Itadori, an unusually strong high-school student who joins his school’s Occult Club. After encountering a cursed object, he swallows one of Ryomen Sukuna’s preserved fingers to save his friends, becoming host to the feared King of Curses. At Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yuji trains under Satoru Gojo alongside first-year sorcerers Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki. Their work involves exorcising curses, creatures born from negative human emotions, while the school’s leaders intend to execute Yuji after all twenty Sukuna fingers are consumed. The season’s principal adversaries include Mahito, a curse whose Idle Transfiguration reshapes souls, and Suguru Geto, a former sorcerer operating with cursed spirits. Episodes also introduce grade classifications, domain expansions, cursed energy, and Yuji’s ability to fight using Black Flash. Before the second season, MAPPA released the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in Japan in December 2021. Based on Akutami’s Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, it centers on Yuta Okkotsu, a boy haunted by the curse of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto. Gojo brings Yuta to Jujutsu High, where he studies with Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda. The film’s conflict culminates in Yuta’s confrontation with Geto, whose plan seeks to unleash curses on Tokyo and Kyoto. Season two, again animated by MAPPA, aired from July to December 2023 and was directed by Shota Goshozono. Its first five episodes adapt the “Hidden Inventory/Premature Death” story, set in 2006, when Gojo and Geto are students assigned to protect Star Plasma Vessel Riko Amanai. The remaining episodes adapt the Shibuya Incident, beginning on Halloween 2018, as curse users and cursed spirits trap civilians behind a veil and target Gojo. The series received the Anime of the Year award at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Following the Shibuya Incident finale, a sequel adapting the Culling Game arc was announced. The anime’s music includes opening themes “Kaikai Kitan” by Eve for season one and “Where Our Blue Is” by Tatsuya Kitani for the Hidden Inventory arc. Hiroshi Seko handled series composition for the television adaptation, while Yoshimasa Terui joined Alisa Okehazama and Hiroaki Tsutsumi as a television score composer.
