Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo will star in Hollywood’s first major live-action Gundam film, based on the Japanese science-fiction franchise known for its Mobile Suits, enormous human-piloted war machines. Produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks, the movie will be released by Netflix.

Jim Mickle, best known for Sweet Tooth, is directing and writing the film. Production began in Queensland, Australia, in April this year and has already wrapped, according to Centineo. Netflix has not yet announced a release date.

The story will be original and follow two Mobile Suit pilots fighting on opposite sides of a war that has pitted Earth against its former space colonies for decades. Shifting alliances and the emergence of a new threat will send the protagonists on a journey that could determine the future of humanity.

The cast includes Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Javon Walton and Jason Isaacs. Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo are also among the project’s producers.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Centineo revealed that the film will be set within the Universal Century, the timeline introduced by the original 1979 series and expanded through other Gundam productions. The specific period in which the story will take place has not yet been disclosed.

The actor described the movie as a space action-romance film and compared its central relationship to “Romeo and Juliet in space.” The synopsis suggests that the characters may develop a bond while belonging to opposing sides of the conflict, but Netflix has not yet confirmed the characters’ names or provided details about the romance.

Gundam began in 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam, which follows Amuro Ray, pilot of the RX-78-2 Gundam during the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. Since then, the franchise has expanded to include series, films, games and Gunpla plastic models.
