Madonna has been confirmed as the opening act for the 2026 VMAs. The singer will take the stage at the awards ceremony on September 27, where she will perform songs from Confessions II, an album released in July this year.The appearance will hold special significance in the artist’s history with the event: it will mark her return to the VMA stage after 23 years. Madonna last performed at the ceremony in 2003, alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott.The 2026 edition will also put Madonna in the spotlight in the race for trophies. She is the ceremony’s most-nominated artist, with 11 nominations, pairing the opening performance with a night in which her name will appear across several categories.Madonna’s relationship with the VMAs began at the very first edition of the awards in 1984, when she performed “Like a Virgin.” Five years later, she returned to the event with “Express Yourself.”In 1990, the singer performed “Vogue” dressed as Marie Antoinette, in a performance that remains a fan favorite.
