Love, Death + Robots - Season 4 is Full of Incredible Episodes!

I believe, as a scriptwriter, that writing for a series like "LDR" must be a dream come true. Unearthly stories, incredible artworks, and hyper-fantastical themes are all part of this remarkable series.

"Love, Death + Robots", the adult animated anthology television series created by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and produced by David Fincher (Mindhunter), brought us a season that is more positive than negative, considering all ten new episodes.

Can't Stop

This episode shows the Red Hot Chili Peppers performing their song "Can't Stop" live at Slane Castle in 2003, the band and audience depicted as marionettes.

As everyone is a marionette, it's up to us, the viewers, to draw our own conclusions on the symbolism behind this choice, which could be how the music industry "leads" their artists. Overall, it is a new version of the show for fans of this band, and a good opener for this season.

Close Encounters of the Mini Kind

Alien visitors reach our world with a message of peace, and us, humans, obviously welcome them with bullets. From then on, this episode is a pandemonium, an alien invasion and an apocalyptic story that unfolds, nonetheless, in miniature.

Which makes it all very fun. This episode is full of horror, destruction, and obvious references to classic science fiction stories about aliens and our stupidity towards the unknown, but in a style that makes everything seem absurdly... cute.

You can't help but laugh when you watch this excellent episode.

Spider Rose

Potent, powerful, introspective. "Spider Rose" shows us how our desire for vengeance can drive us away from everything and consume us, sometimes quite literally.

In a fantastical cyberpunk universe, this episode introduces us to Spider Rose, a mechanist grieving the death of her colleagues and husband by the hands of the assassin Jade Prime.

Now, there's only one thing on her mind: get revenge. However, her feelings change when she ends up with a new creature by her side for a few weeks instead of a powerful weapon. Grief, loss, loneliness, reconnection, and sacrifice are all over this episode, as well as a bittersweet ending. This was one of the best episodes in the season, in my view.

400 Boys

A new gang comes along and destroys their rivals. Some say they're monsters, others, deities... It doesn't really matter. It's up to the survivors, old enemies, to combine forces and defeat a titanic threat.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend", right? We can definitely draw parallels about how new traditions and new generations come to destroy the old, the ancient, and how the past won't go down without a fight.

The Other Large Thing

Remember to feed and treat your cat well. That was the first thing that came to me after I saw this episode, which is a good summary of what would happen if our pets joined Alexa in a quest to exterminate us.

It is hilarious, much because of the feline protagonist, whose real name (and what a name!) you only find out at the very end.

Golgotha

This episode is a live-action short with 3D elements. It tells the story of a vicar, played by Rhys Darby ("What We Do In The Shadows"), who gets the awful task of being Earth's emissary to an alien race that believes their messiah was reborn on Earth as an...hm... dolphin. That's it.

This episode could have unravelled in more bizarre ways, taking advantage of the hilarious original premise. Maybe it's just a reflection on how faith is a personal matter, and you can believe in whatever absurd thing you want.

But I think they just... Well, I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur

This episode, which is like Space Opera "Gladiator", unravels like a visceral poem.

In a space station orbiting Jupiter, the human aristocracy reunites to celebrate a wedding. More specifically, they get together to have fun watching the brutal fight between genetically modified gladiators mounted on also genetically modified dinosaurs.

The ending is nearly a "war cry" encouraging us to resist. The gladiators all get together and fight the tyranny they're under. It is also one of my favorite episodes from this season.

How Zeke Got Religion

During World War II, a B17 called the "Liberty Belle" is tasked with the ungrateful mission of bombarding a church in France that is occupied by @@@@ occultists. They are getting ready to call forth a very bad thing.

This is a powerful, raw episode with blood and guts flying everywhere. It is also one of the best "fallen angel" representations I've seen in pop culture.

It's about how, when facing the inexplicable, we look higher, to the divine, to faith, something to keep us standing and give us the sanity we need to go on.

Voice Cast: Keston John, Braden Lynch, Roger Craig Smith, Gary Furlong, Bruce Thomas, Andrew Morgado e Scott Whyte.

Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners

Just be thankful your appliances can't expose your secrets.

This is a very basic comedy that features an animation style similar to stop-motion. It shows us how despicable some of our habits can be in a very simplistic way.

For He Can Creep

As usual, they left the best for last! This is another episode centered around cats, with 3D elements but mostly in 2D. It features classical music that paces the narration and surrounds us with the atmosphere of London in 1757.

The premise revolves around a poet stuck in an asylum that believes Satan wants him to write a poem that will destroy the world. The only thing protecting him from evil is his black cat, Jeoffry.

And so the plot unfolds. Jeoffry is tempted, hurt, and asks his peers for help to protect his human and his world. The "hatching" animation style is beautiful, and the sense of humor in this episode is sour as well as very playful. This is definitely one of my favorite episodes from this season.

Voice Cast: Dan Stevens, JB Blanc, Jim Broadbent, Nika Futterman, Jane Leeves e Dave B. Mitchell.

Final Words

Eight great episodes out of ten in a season is... quite decent!

This season brought us, once again, many themes, splendid animation styles, and moments that, ranging from pop culture to the fantastical, can make us reflect. Out of the ten episodes, eight of them left me quite satisfied.

Once again, "Love, Death + Robots" gave us a good season of fast episodes for the TikTok generation that are, at times, yes, profound, if you're the type of person that likes that.
