The Purge will return in a new comic book slated for release in late 2027. The project will be written by Dan Watters and illustrated by Juan José Ryp, marking the beginning of a partnership between Blumhouse and IDW Dark, IDW Publishing’s horror imprint. The comic will be the franchise’s next confirmed chapter, but its return will take place on the page rather than in theaters or on television. The film series has released five movies and also had two television seasons. The most recent installment, The Forever Purge, was released in 2021 and pushed the franchise’s premise to its limit by showing killers choosing to continue their violence even after the authorized period had ended. The new story will have room to explore different perspectives within The Purge universe. The franchise has shifted between home-invasion horror and broader action stories, following both people protected behind reinforced windows and those forced to cross the city during a night of legalized crime.Dan Watters has written Batman: Dark Patterns and TMNT: Shredder. Juan José Ryp, meanwhile, has worked on titles including Wolverine: Blood Hunt. In a recent interview, the writer also said that horror was his gateway into comics and fandom, and that The Purge immediately came to mind when Blumhouse properties entered the conversation. The team has not yet revealed the synopsis, main characters or where the story will fall within the timeline. An exact release date has also not been announced. The comic will be the first publication from the IDW Dark line tied to the partnership with Blumhouse, with more information expected before its late-2027 release.
