Primetime, A24’s new film starring Robert Pattinson, screened at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday (5) and received a lengthy standing ovation after the screening. The cast and director Lance Oppenheim attended the premiere.

Reports from the trade press varied on the length of the applause, putting it at between seven and nine consecutive minutes, with an average estimate of eight minutes. At festivals such as Venice, this type of reception is often watched by critics during awards season, as well as potential distributors and buyers.

In the film, Pattinson plays journalist Chris Hansen in a fictionalized take on To Catch a Predator, an NBC program that aired between 2004 and 2007. The show set up stings to lure and expose potential abusers of children and teenagers, with cameras recording the encounters.

Primetime takes a critical view of the format hosted by Hansen. The film explores the sensationalism and tactics used by the program to capitalize on potential pedophilia-related footage.

The film’s preview also suggests that the story will include the incident that led to the cancellation of To Catch a Predator: the 2006 suicide of prosecutor Bill Conradt, after the program’s crew entered his home with search warrants. He had been caught talking to an actor hired by the production to serve as bait.

Skyler Gisondo plays the potential victim in the fictionalized version. The cast also includes Phoebe Bridgers and Merritt Wever, who plays the program’s producer.

Primetime opens in U.S. theaters on September 25.] The film does not yet have a release date in Brazil.
