Benito di Paula died on Sunday (18) at the age of 84. The singer, songwriter and pianist had been hospitalized at Hospital 9 de Julho in São Paulo and had been battling cancer for about a year. His team confirmed his death.

Known for songs including “Retalhos de Cetim”, “Charlie Brown”, “Mulher Brasileira” and “Se Não For Amor”, Benito built a career blending samba with piano and romantic arrangements. His style rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, and his music reached generations of listeners.

Born Uday Vellozo in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, he began singing in hotels and nightclubs before gaining national recognition. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he released dozens of albums and brought other popular influences into his samba. His voice and distinctive delivery made his songs recognizable to listeners across generations.

Benito remained active onstage in recent years. In July of this year, he took part in “Benito 85”, a show created by his son, Rodrigo Vellozo, to celebrate the birthday the musician would have marked in November. He revisited songs from throughout his career during the performance.

His life was also the theme of Águia de Ouro’s parade at the 2025 São Paulo Carnival. With the theme “Em Retalhos de Cetim, a Águia de Ouro do jeito que a vida quer”, the samba school brought his music to the parade route. Benito took part alongside his family.

Details of the wake and burial have yet to be announced.
