Johnny Flynn has revealed a major change to Lucius Malfoy’s backstory in HBO’s new Harry Potter series. The actor, who will play Draco Malfoy’s father, plans to portray the character as someone who was bullied when he was younger before going on to intimidate others.The idea is not part of the story established in the books and adds a new layer to Flynn’s performance. For the actor, Lucius is repeating behavior he once suffered himself.“He was one of those children who were bullied at school and has now become the bully, so he doesn’t know any other way.”- Johnny FlynnFlynn also connected this approach to his own experiences and the people he has met throughout his life. According to him, people who bully others may previously have been victims of abuse, making the divide between heroes and villains less straightforward.In the books, Lucius is portrayed as an arrogant wizard who supports pure-blood supremacy and follows Voldemort. The new series is expected to introduce him earlier than the films did, as the character first appears directly in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he is only mentioned.Johnny Flynn is taking on the role previously played by Jason Isaacs in the film adaptation. The actor also addressed criticism aimed at the cast for taking part in the production amid the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling and her views on transgender people. Without going into detail about his own position, Flynn said he has feelings about the issue but preferred to speak about his gratitude for the opportunity and his personal connection to Harry Potter.He said he joined the project as a fan and was around 10 or 11 years old when the first book was published.
