Pokémon will receive a new animated film in 2027, nearly seven years after its last original feature. Titled Pokémon: Wildcard, the project was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, with its first teaser and poster already unveiled.

The story follows Mikiya, a Pokémon Trading Card Game player aiming to become a champion, and Mimikyu. The teaser shows Mikiya competing in matches while the Pokémon mysteriously appears around him. The yellow hoodie Mikiya wears also references Mimikyu’s appearance.

Few details have been revealed about the plot or the relationship between the two protagonists. The biggest change lies in the story’s focus: Pokémon: Wildcard will be the franchise’s first film dedicated to the card game.

The film will be animated by CloverWorks, the studio behind Spy x Family and Bocchi the Rock!. Katsuhiko Kitada, who worked on The First Slam Dunk, will direct the feature, while Akemi Hayashi, known for Banana Fish, will handle the character designs. STORY inc. will oversee planning and production.

The card game will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026. By March this year, more than 85 billion cards had been produced, with sales in more than 90 countries and regions.

The project also sets Wildcard apart from the traditional animated series and Pokémon Horizons, which has followed Liko and Roy since Ash’s journey ended. Mikiya and Mimikyu have not been presented as official replacements for Ash and Pikachu in the main series, but as protagonists created specifically for the new film.

The last original feature was Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, originally released in Japan in 2020 and distributed internationally afterward. Pokémon: Wildcard will be released in theaters worldwide starting in 2027, though a specific release date has not yet been announced.
