Gareth Edwards has left the direction of the Jurassic World Rebirth sequel due to creative differences. The filmmaker was expected to return to helm Universal's next film, but will not continue with the project.Released in 2025, Jurassic World Rebirth rebooted the science-fiction series and grossed US$870 million worldwide. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey led the cast of the production, which followed a secret mission to obtain dinosaur DNA and create a miracle drug.Universal said it had an incredible experience working with Edwards on Jurassic World Rebirth. The director's departure comes before plot details for the sequel have been confirmed.David Koepp, the screenwriter attached to the new film, is expected to return, as are Johansson, Ali, and Bailey. The studio hopes to begin filming in 2027, but has not yet announced who will take over as director.The Jurassic franchise is experiencing lower revenues compared with the previous trilogy. 2015's Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion, which concluded in 2022, each surpassed US$1 billion at the global box office. These productions also typically have filming budgets above US$250 million.The sequel will be the eighth film in the franchise launched by Steven Spielberg in 1993, based on Michael Crichton's novel. Spielberg directed the first Jurassic Park and The Lost World in 1997; Joe Johnston helmed Jurassic Park III in 2001.Outside the dinosaur series, Edwards directed Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Creator. Universal is working with the expectation of bringing the sequel to sets in 2027.
