Doctor Doom will get digital treatment in Avengers

Robert Downey Jr. filmed his Doctor Doom scenes on set, but his performance will still receive digital enhancement in post-production.

Robert Downey Jr. filmed his scenes as Doctor Doom as usual on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, but the villain’s performance will undergo a second stage during post-production. The process will allow the team to digitally modify the actor’s performance and work on his appearance as well.

In an interview with Empire, co-director Joe Russo explained that Downey Jr. performed every scene physically, providing the foundation for the character’s digital construction. According to the filmmaker, the technology used in the production creates room for a further digital intervention in the actor’s work.

“He was on set performing everything. Because of the way we’re creating the character with a digital layer, we also have a second opportunity to work on his performance at the digital level”

Russo described the method as an “experimental performance” and said the result should surprise audiences. “It’s incredible, but also unexpected. What he brings to the role is something you couldn’t have predicted,” he said.

It has not yet been determined how much of Doctor Doom’s appearance will be created or altered digitally. The technique, however, has already been used in other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Josh Brolin performed Thanos through performance capture before the character was built digitally, while James Spader underwent a similar process to play Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Downey Jr. also has experience with this type of production from the Iron Man films. Russo’s comments, however, indicate that the team is exploring new possibilities for bringing Victor von Doom to the screen.

The studio is still keeping many details about the character secret. Recently, Joe Russo said that Doctor Doom and Tony Stark have nothing in common, deepening the mystery surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s casting in the role.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2026.
