Takashi Yamazaki

Takashi Yamazaki is a Japanese filmmaker known for combining character-centered stories with ambitious visual effects. Born in 1964 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, he began working in computer graphics before directing feature films. That technical background became a defining part of his career, allowing him to create large-scale images while keeping attention on ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.

Yamazaki made his feature-directing debut with “Juvenile” in 2000, a science-fiction adventure about a boy who discovers a small alien robot. He followed it with “Returner” in 2002, a time-travel action film starring Takeshi Kaneshiro. His major breakthrough came with “Always: Sunset on Third Street” in 2005. Set in Tokyo during the late 1950s, the film portrays residents of a poor neighborhood whose lives change as Japan enters a period of rapid postwar growth. Its detailed digital recreation of Tokyo and its emotional ensemble story made it a major domestic success. Yamazaki directed two sequels, “Always 2” in 2005 and “Always: Sunset on Third Street ’64” in 2012.

He later adapted several well-known Japanese properties. “Space Battleship Yamato,” released in 2010, brought the famous animated space opera into live action. “The Eternal Zero” (2013), based on Naoki Hyakuta’s novel, follows a present-day investigation into the wartime life of a kamikaze pilot and became one of Japan’s highest-grossing films. Yamazaki also directed “Parasyte” and “Parasyte: Part 2,” released in 2014 and 2015, adapting Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga about a teenager whose right hand is inhabited by an alien organism.

His later work includes the computer-animated “Lupin III: The First” (2019), the first Japanese feature-length 3D computer-animated film centered on Lupin III, and “The Great War of Archimedes” (2019), a historical drama about political and military conflict surrounding the construction of the Japanese battleship Yamato.

Yamazaki wrote and directed “Godzilla Minus One,” released in Japan in 2023. Set in postwar Japan, it follows survivors confronting Godzilla amid national devastation and personal guilt. The film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, making Yamazaki the first Japanese director to receive that award and “Godzilla Minus One” the first Japanese Godzilla film to win an Oscar.
