João Emanuel Carneiro

João Emanuel Carneiro is a Brazilian screenwriter and television author, best known for creating telenovelas whose plots combine social conflict with tightly constructed mysteries. Born in Rio de Janeiro on February 17, 1970, he entered Brazilian audiovisual writing through cinema and later established a distinctive voice at TV Globo. His work is identifiable not by a single genre, but by morally unstable characters, reversals, and antagonists who often drive the story rather than merely obstruct it.

His early film work included co-writing Central Station (1998), directed by Walter Salles and starring Fernanda Montenegro and Vinícius de Oliveira. The film follows Dora, a former teacher who writes letters for illiterate people at Rio de Janeiro’s Central do Brasil station before traveling with Josué to find his father. Carneiro also wrote for television before creating his first major Globo telenovela, Da Cor do Pecado, which premiered in 2004 and made Alinne Moraes widely recognized as the villain.

In 2006, Carneiro created Cobras & Lagartos, a comic telenovela built around a department store inheritance dispute. Its story established his interest in protagonists who hide identities and in plots where money and social mobility reshape family loyalties. He followed it with A Favorita (2008), a novela structured around an unusually sustained question: whether Flora, played by Patrícia Pillar, or Donatela, played by Claudia Raia, was the true villain. The revelation became the production’s defining narrative turn on-screen.

Carneiro’s largest international success is Avenida Brasil (2012). Set partly in the fictional suburb of Divino, it follows Nina, also known as Rita, as she returns to expose her former stepmother Carminha, played by Adriana Esteves, after being abandoned as a child. The telenovela juxtaposed revenge with Brazil’s stark class divisions and became a major export, airing in numerous countries. Its central betrayal and suspense made Carminha one of Brazilian television’s most recognizable antagonists of its era.

After Avenida Brasil, he created O Rebu (2014), a nonlinear mystery centered on a single party and later developed A Regra do Jogo (2015) and Segundo Sol (2018). Both use shifting alliances and hidden motives. Segundo Sol focused on a wealthy family in Bahia and the conflict between siblings Beto Falcão and Luzia. In 2022, he returned with Todas as Flores, released on Globoplay. The series follows blind Maíra, whose sister Zoé manipulates her through a trafficking scheme.
