Park In-je is a South Korean director whose credited work includes the feature films Moby Dick and The Divine Move, as well as major streaming series such as Kingdom and Moving. His career is notable for placing genre stories in specifically Korean settings, from an investigative reporter’s encounter with a political secret to a professional baduk player’s pursuit of vengeance. Rather than treating these projects as abstract genre exercises, his films and series rely on concrete institutions, rivalries, and family histories to propel conflicts involving people who confront forces more powerful than themselves on behalf of their communities and families. Moby Dick was released in 2011, with Hwang Jung-min playing Lee Bang-woo, a journalist at a newspaper who begins looking into a mysterious bridge explosion. His inquiry leads him to a clandestine file called Moby Dick and to figures who suggest the blast may be tied to a larger coverup. Jin Goo plays Yoon Hyeok, a former soldier connected to the case, while the supporting cast includes Kim Min-hee, Kim Sang-ho, and Kim Bo-yeong. The investigation places Bang-woo under pressure from people who want the material suppressed, and the movie uses his reporting to turn one incident into a widening mystery. In 2014, Park directed The Divine Move, an action film centered on baduk, the board game internationally known as Go. Jung Woo-sung stars as Tae-seok, a highly skilled player who is framed for murder after a high stakes match arranged by the criminal baduk world. He is imprisoned and later seeks revenge against Sal-soo, played by Lee Beom-soo. The cast also includes Ahn Sung-ki, Choi Jin-hyuk, Kim In-kwon, Lee Si-young, and Park Cheol-min. The film turns tournament rooms, gambling networks, and carefully staged games into the machinery of Tae-seok’s campaign against the men who destroyed his family and career previously. Park later directed the second season of Kingdom, Netflix’s Korean period zombie series written by Kim Eun-hee. The season continues the struggle of Crown Prince Lee Chang, played by Ju Ji-hoon, as he confronts both the spreading plague and political opponents in the Joseon court. Park was also one of the directors of Moving, the 2023 Disney+ series adapted from Kang Full’s webtoon and written by Kang Full. Its ensemble includes Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Zo In-sung, Lee Jung-ha, and Go Youn-jung. Moving follows teenagers with inherited abilities and their parents, whose own extraordinary pasts gradually become central to story.
