Hermione Granger

Hermione Jean Granger is a central character in J. K. Rowling’s seven-book Harry Potter series. Born on 19 September 1979 to Muggle parents who work as dentists, she enters the magical world when she receives her Hogwarts letter at age eleven. Before beginning school, she acquires books and studies diligently, arriving at Hogwarts with unusually extensive theoretical knowledge. Her first meeting with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley occurs on the Hogwarts Express in 1991, shortly before the three become friends.

Hermione is sorted into Gryffindor House, despite initially seeming more concerned with rules and academic achievement than with adventure. Her intelligence proves important during the first book, when she identifies Devil’s Snare, uses logic to select the correct potion, and allows Harry to continue toward the Philosopher’s Stone after remaining behind to solve a potion challenge. She also helps expose the false accusation against Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by investigating the basilisk attacks and identifying the connection to the spiders and the diary.

In her third year, Hermione secretly uses a Time-Turner to attend more classes than her schedule permits. The device later enables her and Harry to rescue Sirius Black and Buckbeak from execution. During the following years, she becomes a founding member of Dumbledore’s Army, a student group that practices defensive magic under Harry’s instruction. She also helps Harry investigate Tom Riddle’s past and destroy Horcruxes, magical objects containing fragments of Voldemort’s soul.

Hermione’s preparation is crucial during the trio’s hunt for Horcruxes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Before leaving for the mission, she modifies her parents’ memories so they will forget her and move to Australia, intending to protect them from Voldemort. She packs an enchanted beaded handbag containing supplies, retrieves the Sword of Gryffindor from Gringotts, and destroys Hufflepuff’s cup with a basilisk fang in the Chamber of Secrets. At Hogwarts, she participates in the Battle of Hogwarts and survives the conflict.

After the war, Hermione becomes a Ministry of Magic official. Rowling’s later supplementary information states that she works in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and eventually becomes Minister for Magic. She marries Ron Weasley and has two children, Rose and Hugo. Hermione is therefore defined not simply by scholastic ability, but by her research, moral courage, practical spellwork, and repeated willingness to challenge institutional prejudice, including the enslavement of house-elves through her campaign and organization, S.P.E.W.
