Pensive Professor would fit best in a blue-based spellslinger or tempo deck that casts a high volume of noncreature spells, especially ones costing 3+ mana, since Increment rewards you for spending more mana than its current power or toughness and then snowballs into card draw whenever counters are added; it synergizes particularly well with cheap protection (like Shore Up–style effects), proliferate, or counter-doubling effects to repeatedly trigger the draw ability and turn it into a growing card-advantage engine. However, at 1UU with no immediate board impact and requiring additional mana investment to scale, it competes unfavorably with more efficient blue card-advantage creatures such as Ledger Shredder (which grows and filters cards more reliably and cheaply), Third Path Iconoclast (which generates board presence immediately in spells decks), or even Balmor, Battlemage Captain in aggressive shells, all of which provide value without needing higher mana thresholds.
