Kopala, Warden of Waves would be a great addition to a Merfolk tribal deck in Magic: the Gathering, providing protection against targeted removal and disruption spells from opponents. While Kopala is a solid choice for such a deck, some players may opt for other options like Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, which offers similar protection with the added bonus of countering the spell altogether. However, Kopala's cost reduction ability can still be valuable in the right matchups and could see play in decks looking to protect their Merfolk creatures.

To determine the total cost of an opponent’s spell that targets a Merfolk you control, start with the mana cost or alternative cost that player is paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The converted mana cost of the spell remains unchanged, no matter what the total cost to cast it was.
