About Ingenuity Engine

Ingenuity Engine, Artifact, designed by Yeong-Hao Han first released in Nov, 2020 in the set Commander Legends.

This Artifact Magic: the Gathering card, Ingenuity Engine, would be beneficial in a deck focused on artifact synergy and value generation. The ability to cascade into potentially powerful nonland cards for free can provide significant card advantage, while the ability to sacrifice an artifact to return another artifact to hand offers flexibility and protection. However, in a competitive setting, there may be better options available depending on the specific strategy of the deck, such as Maelstrom Wanderer for a similar cascade effect with additional benefits, so Ingenuity Engine may not see widespread play but could still be a fun and flavorful addition to artifact-themed decks.

Rules

03/19/21

Cascade triggers when you cast the spell, meaning that it resolves before that spell. If you end up casting the exiled card, it will go on the stack above the spell with cascade.

03/19/21

If a spell with cascade is countered, the cascade ability will still resolve normally.

03/19/21

If the last card exiled is a card with an Adventure, you may only cast the spell as an Adventure if that spell has a lesser mana cost than the spell with cascade.

03/19/21

If you cast a card “without paying its mana cost,” you can’t choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those to cast the card.

03/19/21

The converted mana cost of a split card is determined by the combined mana cost of its two halves. If cascade allows you to cast a split card, you may cast either half but not both halves.

11/10/20

If you cast a spell “without paying its mana cost,” you can’t choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those to cast the spell.

11/10/20

Ingenuity Engine can be the target of its own ability. It can be artifact you sacrifice as part of the activation cost. It can even be both, although that will result only in you sacrificing Ingenuity Engine and not returning anything to its owner’s hand.

11/10/20

The converted mana cost of a spell with cascade is determined only by its mana cost, no matter what the total cost to cast the spell was.

11/10/20

When the cascade ability resolves, you must exile cards. The only optional part of the ability is whether or not you cast the last card exiled.

11/10/20

You exile the cards face up. All players will be able to see them.
