John Goodman

John Stephen Goodman was born on June 20, 1952, in Affton, Missouri, and studied drama at Southwest Missouri State University, now Missouri State University. After graduating, he moved to New York in 1975, borrowing $1,000 from his brother while pursuing acting. His early work included stage appearances, and he made his Broadway debut in Loose Ends in 1979. Goodman gained theatrical recognition as Pap Finn in the Broadway musical Big River, which ran from 1985 to 1987. The role earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, establishing a stage foundation for his screen career.

His first major film role came in David Byrne’s True Stories in 1986, followed by Raising Arizona in 1987, where he played Gale Snoats, a prison escapee pursuing Holly Hunter’s character. He also appeared in The Big Easy and Everybody’s All-American. In 1988, ABC cast him as Dan Conner opposite Roseanne Barr in Roseanne. The sitcom ran through 1997, making Dan a defining television character: a working-class father whose humor and frustration anchored the Conner household. Goodman won the 1993 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and received seven consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for the role.

Goodman became closely associated with the films of Joel and Ethan Coen. He played a troubled writer’s acquaintance in Barton Fink, the volatile Vietnam veteran Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski, and Big Dan Teague in O Brother, Where Art Thou? His performance as Walter, filled with militant certainty and explosive comic timing, became one of his most recognized roles. He later appeared in Inside Llewyn Davis, continuing his connection with the filmmakers. Other notable dramatic performances include Howard in 10 Cloverfield Lane, a psychologically unsettling thriller, and John Chambers in Argo, the makeup artist who helps create a false science-fiction production to rescue American hostages in Iran.

Goodman has also been a major voice actor. He played Pacha in Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan in Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University. Sulley’s friendship with Mike Wazowski made the original 2001 film a landmark of modern computer animation. On television, Goodman won an Emmy for his guest role as a Nevada judge on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He later returned as Dan Conner in The Conners and played Eli Gemstone in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones. His career spans Broadway, film, animation, sitcoms, prestige drama, and voice work, with performances distinguished by precise comic rhythm and unusual emotional range.
