Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is a 1993 science-fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from Michael Crichton's 1990 novel. Set largely on the fictional Costa Rican island of Isla Nublar, it follows billionaire entrepreneur John Hammond, played by Richard Attenborough, as he prepares to open a wildlife park populated by cloned dinosaurs. Hammond's company, InGen, extracts dinosaur DNA from mosquitoes preserved in amber and fills gaps in the genetic sequence with frog DNA. Before the park can open, Hammond invites paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), and lawyer Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero) to inspect it. Hammond also brings his grandchildren, Lex and Tim Murphy, played by Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello. The visitors initially encounter living brachiosaurs and parasaurolophuses, but Malcolm warns Hammond that a complex system cannot be controlled simply because it has been designed. The park's crisis begins when disgruntled computer programmer Dennis Nedry, played by Wayne Knight, accepts money from a rival company to steal frozen dinosaur embryos. Nedry disables security systems so he can reach the dock, leaving electric fences inactive during a tropical storm. His escape fails when he is killed by a dilophosaurus. The power failure allows the park's Tyrannosaurus rex to break free and attack the visitors' vehicles. Grant escapes with Lex and Tim, while Malcolm is injured. As Grant, Lex, and Tim make their way through the island, escaped velociraptors become the most immediate danger. Park warden Robert Muldoon, played by Bob Peck, attempts to hunt them but is killed after being outmaneuvered. Ellie and Hammond's chief engineer, Ray Arnold, try to restore power; Arnold is also killed by raptors. In the visitor center, Lex uses the park's computer system to reactivate security while Grant and Sattler protect the children. The raptors corner the group in the main hall before the Tyrannosaurus rex attacks them, allowing the survivors to escape by helicopter. Jurassic Park became a landmark in visual-effects filmmaking, combining computer-generated dinosaurs from Industrial Light & Magic with animatronic creatures created by Stan Winston's team. John Williams composed its score, including the film's main theme. Released in the United States on June 11, 1993, the film became the highest-grossing movie of its time. It won three Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing.
