Jack Carr

Jack Carr is an American thriller writer best known for creating James Reece, the former Navy SEAL at the center of The Terminal List series. Before publishing fiction, Carr spent two decades in Naval Special Warfare. His official biography says he served as an enlisted SEAL sniper, then as an officer leading assault and sniper teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, later commanding or leading units as a platoon commander, troop commander, team leader, and task unit commander. That background became the foundation for his novels, which lean heavily on special operations procedures, weapons detail, intelligence tradecraft, and the moral strain of post-9/11 warfare.

Carr’s debut novel, The Terminal List, was published in 2018 by Atria/Emily Bestler Books. Its plot follows Navy SEAL commander James Reece after his platoon is wiped out in an ambush and he discovers that the disaster, along with attacks on his family, is tied to a conspiracy reaching into the American government and private defense interests. Reece responds by compiling a literal list of those he holds responsible and hunting them down. The book introduced Carr’s recurring mix of revenge thriller, political conspiracy, military authenticity, and distrust of powerful institutions.

He expanded Reece’s story through novels including True Believer, Savage Son, The Devil’s Hand, In the Blood, Only the Dead, and Red Sky Mourning. True Believer takes Reece from hunted fugitive to reluctant asset for U.S. intelligence, while Savage Son places him against a Russian-linked adversary in a survivalist, man-hunting plot. The Devil’s Hand, released around the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, centers on bioterrorism and Iranian-backed threats, showing Carr’s habit of tying fictional plots to contemporary geopolitical fears.

Carr’s work reached a wider audience when The Terminal List was adapted as an Amazon Prime Video series released in 2022, starring Chris Pratt as James Reece and featuring Taylor Kitsch as Ben Edwards. Carr served as an executive producer, and the adaptation kept much of the novel’s emphasis on betrayal, battlefield memory, and tactical specificity. A prequel series, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, later focused on Edwards. Outside fiction, Carr co-authored Targeted: Beirut with historian James M. Scott, examining the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Lebanon and its links to the origins of America’s modern conflict with terrorism. He also hosts the Danger Close podcast, interviewing authors, veterans, historians, and national security figures tied to the subjects that shape his books and public conversations about service today.
