“Zootopia+” is a six-episode animated anthology series from Walt Disney Animation Studios that expands the world introduced in the 2016 feature film “Zootopia.” The series premiered exclusively on Disney+ on November 9, 2022. Rather than continuing Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde’s police partnership as the central storyline, it follows supporting characters and reveals events occurring alongside the original movie. The shorts were directed by Trent Correy and Josie Trinidad, who also worked on “Zootopia.” Their episodes move through different parts of the city, including the tiny mammal community of Little Rodentia, the mammal nightclub scene, and the police department. Because each installment is brief, the show uses visual comedy, quick reversals, and character-specific situations instead of a single extended mystery. “Hopp on Board” focuses on Judy’s parents, Bonnie and Stu Hopps, as they attempt to reach the city and see their daughter’s first day as a police officer. Their journey becomes complicated by a series of travel problems, while the story explains how their ordinary farm life connects to Judy’s move to Zootopia. “The Real Rodents of Little Rodentia” centers on Fru Fru, the daughter of a prominent shrew family. Her wedding preparations are disrupted by a threat that recalls the chaos caused by the city’s savage predators in the feature film. The episode gives Fru Fru, who had only a small role in the movie, a larger family and social world. In “Duke the Musical,” the petty thief Duke Weaselton tries to turn his misfortune into a public performance. The episode develops the weasel seen selling bootleg DVDs in the original film and turns his criminal ambition into a deliberately theatrical story. “The Godfather of the Bride” follows Mr. Big as he prepares for Fru Fru’s wedding. Its title and staging play with conventions from gangster cinema, while the plot emphasizes the affectionate, protective relationship between the powerful arctic shrew and his daughter. “So You Think You Can Prance” places Chief Bogo, Clawhauser, and other officers in a dance competition. The short contrasts Bogo’s stern professional image with Clawhauser’s enthusiasm for performance. Finally, “Dinner Rush” follows Sam, a waitress at the Rainforest District restaurant, during an unusually demanding shift. Together, the six stories add perspectives that the film’s main police investigation could not explore, while preserving its animal-based social satire and densely populated urban setting.
